Backyard putting greens in the Humble-Atascocita corridor almost always come as part of a pool surround project, and that is how we design them — as integrated outdoor living elements rather than standalone features dropped into an otherwise grass backyard. The combination of pool, turf surround, and putting green works spatially when they share a common drainage plan and when the visual elements — turf shade, edge treatment, pool tile coordination — are designed as a unified outdoor room.
I managed pool projects for years before moving to landscape, and the clients who invested in a putting green alongside their pool build were always the happiest with the outdoor result. The putting green gave the backyard a second functional zone — a place to be doing something other than sitting by the pool. In the Humble and Lake Houston corridor, where backyards see heavy seasonal use during the spring and fall when the pool is not warm enough for swimming but the weather is ideal for outdoor time, that second zone makes the yard genuinely more livable.
The engineering requirements for a putting green in this watershed are more demanding than in drier climates. A flat putting green surface that holds water for 48 hours after a rain event is not usable, and in the Lake Houston watershed that scenario happens multiple times per year. We build putting greens with a base specification that drains within two to four hours of rain stopping — a performance standard we verify during the installation and reference in the post-install first-storm protocol.
The subgrade challenge for putting greens is the same expansive clay problem we face in all our work here. A putting green base that doesn't account for seasonal clay movement develops surface undulation within two to three years — the kind of lumpy surface that makes a consistent putting stroke impossible. We use a compacted decomposed granite or crushed concrete base with a slightly domed or convex grade profile that accommodates clay movement without permanently deforming the putting surface.
